On 21 and 22 October 2025, an international practitioners’ conference titled “Transformative Transitional Justice in Practice” was held in Berlin, organized by the Global Learning Hub for Transitional Justice and Reconciliation. The conference brought together around 80 practitioners, policymakers, and activists from different parts of the world, providing a space for collective reflection, exchange of experiences, and mutual solidarity at a time marked by democratic backsliding and global challenges to human rights.
During the conference, participants shared their experiences and discussed strategies for advancing transitional justice processes that are more inclusive, participatory, and genuinely transformative, with the aim of creating long-term social change.
As a representative of the Association Forgotten Children of War, Tarik Ekmeščić attended the conference and actively participated in the exchange of experiences and perspectives on transformative approaches to justice, with a particular focus on intergenerational trauma and the social recognition of children born of war.
Through plenary discussions, thematic workshops, and peer consultation sessions, participants addressed topics such as:
Special emphasis was placed on locally grounded, people-centered approaches as key to sustainable social transformation and the rebuilding of trust.
The conclusions and recommendations from the conference will be consolidated into synthesis reports and policy documents, with the aim of influencing global policies and strengthening the capacities of transitional justice practitioners worldwide. The conference once again reaffirmed the importance of interregional cooperation, survivor-centered processes, and continuous learning to ensure that justice efforts remain relevant, resilient, and truly transformative in complex and changing social contexts.
