In cooperation with the Association Forgotten Children of War, a workshop titled “When Rights Fail: Children Between War, Law and Silence” was held on May 19, 2026, at the Public Institution Secondary Mechanical Technical School Sarajevo.
The workshop was prepared by students of the Civitas section and brought together students and teachers with the aim of opening dialogue on the position of children in war-affected areas, the protection of human rights, and the consequences of violations of international humanitarian law.
Representing the Association Forgotten Children of War, legal consultant Tarik Ekmeščić participated in the workshop and spoke about the position of children born as a consequence of wartime sexual violence, their long-standing struggle for recognition, dignity, and the realization of fundamental human rights. Particular attention was given to the long-term consequences of war that disproportionately affect children, the importance of institutional protection, and the need for greater social understanding and responsibility toward this category.
Through interactive activities, discussions, and creative content, students had the opportunity to reflect on how war affects children and deprives them of rights guaranteed under international humanitarian law, including the rights to safety, education, family, and a dignified childhood.
As part of the workshop, members of the Civitas section also prepared a video presentation dedicated to children’s rights, wartime suffering, and the importance of protecting human dignity, sending a strong message of peace, empathy, and social responsibility toward children.
The workshop concluded with an open discussion titled “What Can We Do to Prevent Rights from Failing?”, during which students shared their thoughts and proposals, demonstrating a high level of empathy, awareness, and willingness to actively reflect on the importance of protecting human rights and building a more just society.
