Meeting with the Prime Minister of Sarajevo Canton on Advancing the Rights of Children Born of War

ZDR

On 28 November 2025, representatives of the Association Forgotten Children of War held a meeting with the Prime Minister of Sarajevo Canton, Nihad Uk, and Cabinet Representative Anita Polunić, with the aim of opening a dialogue on improving the rights of children born as a result of war and aligning cantonal regulations with the Federal Law on the Protection of Civilian War Victims.

During the meeting, the Association highlighted the key challenges that this category continues to face, particularly the need for their clear and systematic inclusion in cantonal regulations, public calls, and official decisions. It was emphasized that children born of wartime sexual violence often remain outside existing support mechanisms, despite the legal framework established at higher levels of government.

The Prime Minister of Sarajevo Canton expressed readiness to identify all relevant cantonal regulations where the scope of beneficiaries could be expanded, noting public calls—especially in the areas of social protection and housing policies—as an important area for action.

The meeting took place in a constructive atmosphere, with an agreement that the Association would provide additional documentation, including examples of good practice and an overview of regulations requiring alignment. It was also agreed that communication would continue to ensure concrete and sustainable improvements to cantonal policies, so that the rights of children born of war are recognized and realized in practice, and not only on paper.
