Association “Forgotten Children of War” – Sarajevo

The Association “Forgotten Children of War” is seeking to hire a full-time Legal Officer for a 12-month period, with the possibility of extension based on performance and available funding.

About Us:

“Forgotten Children of War” is a human rights organization committed to achieving legal and social recognition for children born of wartime sexual violence. Through advocacy, research, art, and international cooperation, we work to strengthen legal frameworks and public policies that protect and promote the rights of these children.

As our Legal Officer, you will play a key role in our new project: “Strengthening Transitional Justice and Historical Understanding, with a Focus on the Legal Protection of Children Born of War.” This project includes legal monitoring, policy analysis, advocacy, capacity building, and support to an international network focused on the rights of war-born children.

Key Responsibilities:

• Conduct legal analysis and interpretation of relevant laws and regulations in the Federation of BiH, Republika Srpska, and Brčko District; 

• Monitor the alignment of national regulations with domestic and international legal standards; 

• Manage legal procedures related to acquiring civil victim of war status; 

• Draft legal opinions, policy briefs, and legislative reform recommendations; 

• Oversee the implementation of the Law on Civil Victims of War; 

• Collaborate with public institutions and authorities to advance the rights of our target group; 

• Engage with relevant stakeholders and networks relevant to this field; 

• Assist in organizing public discussions, roundtables, and educational events; 

• Contribute to annual reports tracking legal protections for children born of war; 

• Support project planning, execution, and reporting in the area of legal advocacy; 

• Provide legal advice and assistance to our members and beneficiaries.

Candidate Profile:

• A law degree (VII level / LL.B. or equivalent – Master’s degree is an asset); 

• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in human rights, social protection, or transitional justice; 

• Demonstrated experience in drafting legal analyses, reports, or policy papers is highly desirable; 

• Strong understanding of the social protection system in Bosnia and Herzegovina; 

• Excellent analytical and strategic thinking skills; 

• Experience working with marginalized and vulnerable communities; 

• Proficiency in MS Office and digital tools; 

• Fluency in English (written and spoken); 

• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively; 

• High professional integrity and strong commitment to human rights.
