Ajna Jusić, president of the “Forgotten Children of War” Association, has been named one of the 12 recipients of this year’s International Women of Courage (IWOC) Award. The award ceremony will take place today at 5:30 PM at the White House in Washington, D.C., with U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and First Lady Jill Biden hosting the event.
For the past 18 years, the IWOC Award has been presented by the U.S. Secretary of State to women worldwide who have shown exceptional courage, strength, and leadership in advocating for peace, justice, human rights, gender equality, and the empowerment of women and girls in all their diversity – often at great personal risk and sacrifice. Since its inception in March 2007, the U.S. Department of State has honored more than 190 women from 90 countries.
U.S. diplomatic missions abroad nominate one woman from each country, and finalists are selected and approved by senior officials at the State Department. Following the ceremony, the awardees will participate in the International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP) and other initiatives in Los Angeles, where they will collaborate with U.S. counterparts to develop strategies and ideas for empowering women and girls globally.
